The graphics also met with mixed reactions, with critics noting grainy bitmaps but a pleasing lack of pop-up. Some critics complimented the sound effects as realistic, while others found the engine sounds grating, likening them to motorcycles or blenders.

Next Generation, for example, stated that 'It's a nice idea, but for the most part, it's neither well-executed nor well-integrated into gameplay, and comes across like more of a gimmick than anything else.' Both Next Generation and IGN remarked that most of the tracks are too easy, while the buggy tracks feature extremely difficult handling, making the challenge too uneven.

While Edge praised the game for successfully combining the realism of a racing simulator with the style of an arcade racing game, most reviews assessed that by taking on every single racing style in one game, Total Drivin failed to excel at any one style and came out highly inconsistent. In Japan, where the game was ported and published by Atlus under the name Gekisō!! Grand Racing: Total Drivin' ( 激走!! グランドレーシング Total Drivin', Gekisō!! Gurando Rēshingu Totaru Doraibin) on 23 April 1998, Famitsu gave it a score of 23 out of 40.

At the end of the day then for me The Grand Tour Game is off to a good start and if you’ve got a couple of friends who like fun and arcade style racing then you can do much worse than this game, which means that I’m definitely excited to see what comes next because of this.The game received above-average reviews. In terms of content there isn’t a huge amount for you to get to grips with yet but there is expected to be much more as well as online, so without a doubt I’m prepared to wait for this. I’m glad I did as well because even though the controls aren’t as good as they should be at times each car feels unique and makes you want to carry on despite this small issue. Instead the game tries to be funny and it succeeds at that which meant trying each car was definitely something I wanted to do. I will say straight off the bat though that if you’re looking for a realistic Forza-style experience then you won’t find it here but The Grand Tour Game doesn’t try to be that.

Thankfully I have no doubt that fans of the TV series will enjoy the game version and even though it has a few shortcomings It still manages to deliver quite a lot of fun and enjoyable moments. I’m not going to lie from the moment it was first announced I was really looking forward to The Grand Tour Game and if it had half the humor as the TV program then I was sure to enjoy it. The controls feel a little fiddly and don’t always remain as responsive as they should which was a little annoying. There isn’t a great deal of content available yet but that should hopefully change in the coming months. In terms of realism the game doesn’t excel very much and if you’re looking for a Forza-style experience then this will probably disappoint. Racing against friends is very fun and I can only see the racing getting even more fun if they bring online components like they said they were going to do. Each car in the game is very fun to race with and that’s mainly because each car feels unique and has a nice amount of variety packed within them. While the presentation side of the game isn’t going to win any awards any time soon I actually enjoyed both the visuals and sound design that were present. Fans of The Grand Tour will no doubt enjoy this game because it does a good job of recreating the TV formula into a game formula that’s fun.
